Bear 435, also known as Holly, had initially appeared to triumph over Bear 747 but organisers found Holly received 9,000 votes in a short space of time. This year’s competition wasn’t without controversy, however as voting irregularities almost knocked out Bear 747 in the semi-finals. Bear 747 is yet to be given an official name but is a “skilled and efficient angler who is found fishing most often in the jacuzzi or near the far pool of Brooks Falls”. The final of Fat Bear Week was won this year by Bear 747 over Bear 901, with the champion receiving more than 68,000 votes. Fans then vote in a knockout-style competition to determine their favourite ‘Fat Bear’. Park rangers select 12 bears and provide two photos of the animals - one taken in mid-July and the other taken in early-September with the latter photo showing each bear after they have eaten lots of salmon to gain weight before hibernating over winter. Each year the bears of Alaska’s Katami national park ‘compete’ in a unique competition - Fat Bear Week.
